‘Football is punishing Valencia’

Pako Ayestaran claims the footballing gods are “punishing” Valencia after they slumped to a third straight defeat in La Liga on Saturday against Real Betis.

Goals from Rodrigo Moreno and Ezequiel Garay appeared to have rescued Valencia a draw, Los Che having gone 2-0 down to Ruben Castro and Joaquin Sanchez efforts, but they were ultimately denied a first point for 2016-17 by the veteran striker in stoppage time.

“It’s very hard to take because when you think [the game] could finish 3-2 to us, we were punished at the last minute,” the Coach said after the game.

“We all win and we all lose together. It’s not a problem of defensive concept. We had more chances than them in the second half.

“They defended worse than us, but football punished us. We hit the crossbar, their goalkeeper made spectacular saves.

“We have a better squad now. I’m not happy [at the moment], but I’m very excited because I still think we have a good squad.

“I still believe in the players. They still believe and we’ll move forward. The fans have also been spectacular.

“In these situations, it’s easy to stop believing but we’ll keep going. This team have excited the fans at certain moments. It’s not a message to anyone, it’s something that happens.

“There are players who haven’t been here long. We have to see how they’ll react.

“Parejo is our captain, but we have two, Enzo and him. We want four captains and whenever they’re known, they’ll decide on the other two.”
