Pako Ayestaran insists he has the “perfect profile” to manage Valencia permanently, despite ending the season with a 1-0 defeat to Real Sociedad.
Mikel Oyarzabal’s winner at the death condemned Valencia to a third straight defeat and a 12th-place finish in La Liga – their lowest since 1988 – yet Pako retained belief in his ability to lead Los Che next season after the game.
“I have the perfect profile to manage Valencia,” the caretaker said.
“From what I know, [candidates must be able] to establish a high-performance environment, that they demand the maximum. The priority should be the club over individuals.
“[The candidate must] also be able to define the type of player they want, professionals at all times.
“The sooner [the new Coach is appointed], the better, but that’s not up to me.
“It was very difficult, losing at the last second with that bad feeling.
“Still, my players haven’t failed me. They mustn’t be analysed over one game, but rather the whole season.
“[On what he’d do for morale after a ‘sad and empty’ Mestalla], if I’m still here then I’ll say [what I’d do]. I can’t make any manifestations yet.”
