Carlo Ancelotti makes Champions League final plan for Thibaut Courtois

Thibaut Courtois is set to start in Real Madrid’s UEFA Champions League final against Borussia Dortmund.

Los Blancos are in cruise control ahead of their meeting with the Bundesliga side at Wembley on June 1 with the La Liga title wrapped up.

The incoming four league games will be used as to rotate and keep players fresh ahead of the final.

Carlo Ancelotti is looking to strike a balance within his squad to ensure his players arrive at the showpiece game in peak condition.

The Italian coach is not expected to make too many starting changes from the previous rounds of European action but he faces a key call in goal.

Courtois has only just returned to match action, following a serious knee injury, but he will feature in La Liga this month.

Andriy Lunin has been crucial part of Real Madrid’s march to the final but he could be replaced against Dortmund.

As per the latest update from Relevo, Ancelotti is edging towards pragmatism over his decision, and he believes the Belgian offers a greater certainty of victory.

  1. Of course, its a no brainer.
Lunin has had his very high peaks mixed with some lows and when it comes to finals, Courtois has played a couple already and know what it takes to win one.

  2. Starting Courtois would be a mistake. Lunin has carried the team the entire season and deserves to continue as the #1. Rewarding him with a benching tells the locker room that performance on the pitch is NOT how you gain playing time.

    1. Coach has to give the team the best chance to win, sentiment is for the romantic movies, this is football.
Courtois is more experienced and Lunin knew what he was signing up for, ergo backup.
