Real Madrid edge out Alaves to top La Liga

Real Madrid will top La Liga overnight, after picking up a battling 2-1 win away at Alaves.

Zinedine Zidane's side now have a three point lead on rivals Barcelona, who face Atletico Madrid on Sunday night, thanks to second half goals from captain Sergio Ramos and Dani Carvajal.

The visitors struggled to create chance in the first half, with Alaves keeper Fernando Pacheco only called into action to make routine stops from the returning Gareth Bale and Casemiro.

Zidane's side looked to increase the tempo after the break, with veteran defender Ramos finding the breakthrough on 53 minutes.

Toni Kroos whipped an excellent free kick into the far post, and Ramos got away from his marker to power a header past Pacheco.

However, Alaves were not about to roll over against their esteemed opponents, with former Arsenal man Lucas Perez finding an equaliser on 65 minutes.

Ramos was penalised for fouling Joselu inside the area, and Perez confidently tucked the penalty past Alphonse Areola.

But despite a surge in confidence for Asier Garitano's side, their lead was short lived, as Real Madrid found a scrappy winner three minutes later.

Luka Modric's curled cross was headed onto the post by Isco, and Carvajal was alive to the rebound to bundle over the line for a valuable three points.
