Zindine Zidane: ‘Mature’ Karim Benzema is vital to Real Madrid in the post-Cristiano Ronaldo era

Real Madrid boss Zinedine Zidane praised forward Karim Benzema as he made history in their 6-0 Champions League win at home to Galatasaray. 

The former French international scored twice in the win, bringing his Champions League goal total to 66 goals, and becoming the third player to score in 15 consecutive seasons, alongside Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.

Following a historic night for the former Lyon striker, his manager was in no doubt about his importance to the Real Madrid team.

"His numbers speak for themselves," he told an post game interview with Marca.

"We know all about his quality, and his important role in the team."

"Nothing has really changed after Cristiano left, as Benzema has matured."

"He has taken on a leadership role this season, and his off field changes. including becoming a father, have been reflected in his form."

Benzema has not scored in Champions League action in 2019-20 prior to this game, but he is the second highest scorer in La Liga this season, with seven goals so far.
