Celta Vigo close to Oscar Garcia Junyent appointment

Celta Vigo look set to appoint Oscar Garcia Junyent to succeed the sacked Fran Escriba, according to a report in Cadena Cope.

The former Barcelona midfielder – who also enjoyed playing stints at Valencia and Espanyol – has extensive coaching experience but has never been in the dugout in La Liga.

His most notable experience to date came at Austrian club Red Bull Salzburg, whom he guided to successive domestic doubles between 2015 and 2017.

After being youth coach at Barcelona, he guided Maccabi Tel Aviv to the Israeli title in 2013 and led Brighton to the playoffs in the Championship the following year.

He managed Watford for four games thereafter but stepped down due to health problems, while he has also had short-term stints at Maccabi (again), Saint-Etienne and Olympiakos.

The Galician side have lost each of their last four outings and had only scored one goal during that run – coming courtesy of the penalty spot.

The biggest concern at the club had been that they have scored just six goals across their 12 legaue matches this campaign having also been involved in a relegation battle last season.

Celta’s next clash in La Liga is a testing trip to Barcelona next weekend with the Galician side two points adrift of Real Mallorca in 17th.
