Real Betis boss Rubi must beat Celta Vigo to retain job

The future of Real Betis Coach Rubi will depend on the midweek result against fellow strugglers Celta Vigo, say Marca.

Los Verdiblancos find themselves in the relegation zone after ten rounds of action, with just nine points obtained to date.

Sunday’s 1-0 defeat at Andalusian neighbours saw Betis fail to record a shot on target and they also have the worst defensive numbers in the division.

The 49-year-old was only appointed in his position this summer, moving from Espanyol, but has struggled to find a run of good form across the opening two months of the campaign.

Rubi led Huesca to promotion from the second tier for the first time in the club’s history in 2018 but subsequently moved to the RCDE Stadium.

The success continued for the 49-year-old last season as he returned the Catalan club to European football for the first time in over a decade.

It was claimed by both Cadena Ser and El Desmarque last week, drawing on reports from Canal Sur, that senior players have requested to Betis president Angel Haro to consider former boss Quique Setien’s return to the club.

Setien was appointed at Betis at the start of the 2017-18 campaign, leading them to a 6th-place finish – their highest since 2005, and a return to European football for the first time in five seasons.

However, the Andalusian club suffered a sharp downturn in form in the final six months of his stint and only secured a top-half finish on the final day of the campaign.

Setien led Betis to victories at Barcelona, Real Madrid and Milan last season, alongside defeating Atletico Madrid.
