Barcelona will wait on Messi, Dembele fitness – Valverde

Barcelona boss Ernesto Valverde is unsure if Lionel Messi or Ousmane Dembele will feature against Inter on Wednesday night.

The attacking duo both sat out Saturday’s 2-0 victory at Getafe with muscular injuries, although they have subsequently taken part in training sessions for the club.

However, it is unclear if either or both will be ready for selection for the crunch European match, with Antoine Griezmann, Luis Suarez and Carles Perez also pushing for starts.

The Nerazzurri travel to Barcelona in a crunch Champions League clash on Wednesday night with both sides aiming to secure their first victory of a finely-balanced group.

“We have to wait for the training session, as Ousmane Dembele and Messi only took part in a portion of yesterday’s session. We’ll see if we can count on them or not,” Valverde told reporters, as cited by Marca.

“Obviously, I can’t be happy with these injuries, but I am not worried either. Antoine Griezmann could play on the left or in the centre, as we have other players on the right.

“There is a good atmosphere in the dressing room and we worked very hard to be a cohesive unit. Every year we start out feeling the pressure to win and we have the kind of squad that can win everything, even if at times it works and at others it doesn’t.

“We are on home turf against Inter and are to be considered a reliable team. I don’t know who the favourites are tomorrow and I am not interested, all we know is that we have to win and will give it our best shot.

“Our objective is to top the group, but if it becomes complicated, then second place is fine too. Inter are in good shape and won all their Serie A games, but drew the Champions League opener at home with Slavia Prague. I think it’ll be an interesting game.”
