Xabi Alonso linked as Zinedine Zidane’s replacement at Real Madrid

Real Madrid club president Florentino Perez is reportedly keen on bringing Xabi Alonso back to the club.

According to reports in Mundo Deportivo, Perez is growing frustrated with Zinedine Zidane's performance, and has highlighted the former Spanish international as his long term successor at the Santiago Bernabeu.

Alonso, who completed his coaching badges with current Real Madrid coach Raul, also worked with the club's underage sides during the 2017-118 season.

However he reportedly rejected a permanent role in the Spanish capital, preferring instead to return to his boyhood club as coach for their reserve side, along with former team mates Xabi Prieto and Imanol Agirretxe.

Alonso made over 200 appearances for Real Madrid as a player, between 2009 and 2015, winning the La Liga title in 2012 and the Champions League in 2014, under Zidane.
