Robert Moreno: If Luis Enrique wants to return, I step down

Spain national team manager Robert Moreno insists he will step down from the role should Luis Enrique ever wish to return.

Moreno assumed first-team responsibilities full-time earlier this year when Enrique stepped down due to personal reasons, while last week his nine-year-old daughter Xana tragically passed away from bone cancer.

“If Luis Enrique wants to return one day, then I take a step to the side,” Moreno told reporters, as cited by Marca.

“It has been a difficult week. We will try to give a tiny joy in a very bad moment. It is the only thing we can do.”

Former Barcelona boss Enrique had not been present in the dugout for his side’s recent matches against Malta, the Faroe Islands and Sweden, before he officially stepped down in late June.

Moreno, Enrique’s long-term assistant who stepped in to take the helm of the last three matches, is now in the position permanently.

Spain travel to Romania on Thursday before hosting Faroe Islands on Sunday as they continue their qualification campaign for the 2020 European Championships.

Moreno – previous number two at Roma, Celta Vigo and Barcelona – is said to be very well-liked within La Roja’s squad.
