Gerard Pique calls on FC Barcelona to improve

FC Barcelona defender Gerard Pique has called on his teammates to improve following an opening day defeat to Athletic Bilbao.

Ernesto Valverde's side lost 1-0 away at San Mames, following Aritz Aduriz's spectacular late goal, as they kicked off their La Liga title defence in 2019-20.

Pique, who captained the side in the absence of Lionel Messi, was firm in his view that the Catalan side were simply not good enough against their Basque hosts.

"This result has put us in our place, and we were not great and they took advantage.

"We did well going forward, and improved in the second half, but in the end the small details can kill you.

"However it is better to lose a game like this at this stage of the season, as we are still coming out of the pre-season period."

Aduriz's late goal was the big story from the game, however FC Barcelona also confirmed after the match that Luis Suarez is expected to miss a month of action due to a calf injury.
