Dani Carvajal to miss Real Madrid’s La Liga opener

Real Madrid will be without defender Dani Carvajal for their opening game of the 2019-20 La Liga season.

The defender picked up a booking in the final game of the 2018-19 season, making it five in 2019, an incurring an automatic one-game suspension, despite the season ending.

His participation had been a source of confusion, with La Liga announcing that suspensions collected by players could not be carried over from one season to another.

However that directive had not been signed off by the league's governing body in time to remove Carvajal's suspension – with the new rule coming into play at the start of the 2020-21 campaign.

Manager Zinedine Zidane was set to name the Spanish international in the starting line up for the game at the Estadio de Balaidos on August 17, and now he looks set to start Alvaro Odriozola in his place.
