Herrera targets Champions League with Atletico Madrid

New Atletico Madrid signing Hector Herrera believes the club can win the Champions League. ‘Everybody wants to win it.’

Herrera was on Wednesday confirmed as an Atletico player, having initially agreed terms with the club in March, and told Marca as he arrived at Madrid’s Barajas airport that he was sure he made the right decision.

“I join with all the readiness in the world, with the enthusiasm and desire to contribute my best. I’m very excited and motivated, grateful for the opportunity with one of the clubs with the greatest histories,” the former Porto midfielder said.

“I haven’t had a chance to speak to [Diego Simeone]. Tomorrow I will. Atletico was the best option, I think, because of their system, which is perfect for my style of play.”

Herrera was questioned over his ambitions with his new club, and what former Atletico forward Adrian, a teammate in Portugal, had told him of Los Colchoneros.

“I’ve spoken to him a lot to know a bit about Atletico, but you have to be prepared for all kinds of things,” he continued, before being asked if winning the Champions League was a viable target.

“Yes, it is. There’s a lot of excitement about that trophy. Everyone wants to win it.”
