Former Liverpool defender Alberto Moreno to join Villarreal

Villarreal have agreed to sign free agent Alberto Moreno this summer following his release from Liverpool, report Marca.

The 26-year-old left Sevilla to move to Merseyside in the summer of 2014 in a €14m (£12m) deal, but his contract at Anfield expired this summer.

Indeed, the full-back recently hinted he wanted to re-join the Andalusian club this summer as he told ABC de Sevilla, as cited by Marca: “It would be nice to return home and enjoy the fans again.”

Moreno made just two Premier League appearances last campaign despite steering clear of injury, with Andrew Robertson firmly established as the club’s number one left-back.

He will officially become a Villarreal player on 1 July when the transfer window reopens and when his Liverpool deal officially expires and allows him to join a new club, but the forms have already been signed.

Moreno is set to be the first of a number of new arrivals at the Yellow Submarine this summer with former Valencia defender Raul Albiol set to join in a €4m move from Napoli.
