Real Mallorca win promotion to La Liga

Real Mallorca recovered from a 2-0 first leg defeat to seal promotion back to Liga in their promotion playoff final against Deportivo La Coruna.

Depor had won the first leg at the Riazor on Thursday by two goals and were favourites to progress going into the second leg at the Estadi de Son Moix.

However, the hosts were rampant on Sunday with Croatian striker Ante Budimir netting midway through the first half and then veteran midfielder Salva Sevilla striking in the 62nd minute to level the tie on aggregate.

Abdon Prats then scored a bullet effort with eight minutes remaining to put the Islanders ahead in the tie for the first time and on course for a first return to La Liga in six years.

Mallorca have now secured back-to-back promotions after being relegated to the third tier in 2017 – for the first time in their history.

They had initially dropped out of the top tier in 2013 – ending a 16-year stay in the division – and join Osasuna and Granada in winning promotion to La Liga.
