Girona could get La Liga reprieve if Real Valladolid are relegated

Girona could be granted a La Liga return should Real Valladolid be relegated from the top flight.

The Catalan side finished third bottom in the 2018-19 La Liga season, sealing a return to the Segunda Division for the first time since 2017, however if Real Valladolid are found guilty of match fixing.

The club from the Castille region are being investigated by Spanish football authorities amid allegations of match fixing in their final game of the season, where they lost 2-0 at home to Valencia, who secured Champions League qualification for 2019-20.

Betting patterns surrounding the game are being looked into, and if Valladolid players and club staff are found to have acted unethically, or potentially illegally, then the club could be docked six points.

That removal of points will see them trade places with Girona, after finishing four points ahead of them, in 17th, and Sergio Gonzalez's side drop down to the second tier.

However according to reports in Spanish daily newspaper El Mundo, the Catalan side have also presented the idea of re-joining La Liga as a 21st side, if Real Valladolid are found not to have done enough to warrant relegation – this has reportedly been dismissed by the RFEF and La Liga.
