Kepa Arrizabalaga: Real Madrid transfer saga helped me

Chelsea and Spain goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga admits he ‘learned a lot’ from the transfer saga linking him to Real Madrid.

Then at Athletic Bilbao, the goalkeeper was strongly linked with a move to Madrid in January 2018 before committing his future to the Basques – although he move to Stamford Bridge later that year.

“I do not see it as a bad thing to have happened, it was one more experience in my life that I had to pass through,” Kepa explained on in an interview with Marca.

“I learned because everything happened to me. It will serve me well for the future. There was a lot of talk about me. Everyone talked. Because of my way of being I did not want to talk until it was all finished, but I wanted to clarify it. Those were the most difficult moments.”

Kepa also discussed his relationship with fellow Spain international David De Gea: “It is very good. The training environment is very good, we both play in great teams that fight for similar objectives. Whenever we can we get together, we exchange messages – there is no problem.

“Should I be first choice? That question is not for me. It's for the Coach. In the squad we are three goalkeepers that are competing for the position. The three of us fight to play. Whoever comes out will do it well.”
