La Rojita boss Luis Milla has apologised for his team’s abject performances at the London Olympics.
The 46-year-old took full responsibility for Spain’s shock exit from the tournament, having failed to score a single goal in consecutive 1-0 defeats to Japan and Honduras and the draw with Morocco at Old Trafford on Wednesday.
“I am extremely disappointed because we deserved more but I am the person responsible,” he told the Spanish Football Federation’s website.
“The lack of goals was frustrating, as was our elimination, because we created chances to score, but you have to take them.
“That is the difference. If we had been even minimally successful then we would have taken six points.”
Milla, who had previously led the Spanish Under-21 side to victory in the European Championships in Denmark, also spoke of his experiences both on a personal and professional level.
“I am sad because I came here with great hope and I think we did a good job, but thinking about it now we suffered from a lack of games and days to prepare.
“I am disappointed because we brought great expectation after the displays in Denmark with a team that competed very well.
“All three games here were very difficult but we suffered some misfortune in the first two games in front of goal. We had plenty of chances to win both.
“We now have to analyse where we can improve, but in football there is a very fine line and we were unlucky in this competition,” he concluded.
