Arbeloa extends Madrid contract

Real Madrid defender Alvaro Arbeloa has extended his contract with Los Blancos until 2016, the club’s official website has announced.

The 29-year-old, signed from Liverpool for €4m in July 2009, said he was delighted with the new deal and the confidence placed in him, adding that he hoped to remain with the Spanish champions for a few years to come.

“I am more than happy. For me it is a source of pride and an honour to be at this club,” he declared.

“To be able to extend my contract until 2016 is a reason for absolute joy. I am delighted the club trust in me and hope to continue to enjoy it here.

“I hope this is not my last contract with Madrid, although it is difficult to retire here because the best players in the world come to this club.

“When you reach a certain age it is not easy to maintain the same level.”

Arbeloa, who was a member of the Spain squad that won the 2010 World Cup and the European Championship in 2008 and 2012, began his career with Madrid as a teenager before moves to Deportivo de La Coruna and Liverpool.

However, he believes since returning to the Santiago Bernabeu he is a much better player and credits boss Jose Mourinho with the improvement.

“Mourinho has turned me into a better footballer and has made me take a very important step in my career,” said Arbeloa.
