Lamine Yamal

Incredible story of how Barcelona and Spain star Lamine Yamal was named emerges

Barcelona teenager Lamine Yamal is all the rage in La Liga so far, with his 7 goal contributions so far outstripping anyone else in Spain. Already with a Euros medal to his name, Lamine Yamal is now appearing on talk shows, as his celebrity status catches up with his footballing ability.

A number of anecdotes about Lamine Yamal have begun to emerge, and Cadena SER have revealed another. His name itself – which functions in a pair as with Luis Enrique – is in fact a combination of the names of two people that his parents knew.

His full name is Lamine Yamal Nasraoui Ebana, his surnames coming from Guinean mother Shaila Ebana and father Mounir Nasraoui, who is of Moroccan origins. As a young couple that could not afford much, they began living with two other people, and falling on hard times, at one point could not afford the rent. As a show of their appreciation for their kindness, they promised to name a child after Lamine and Yamal if they ever had one, and so it was that Lamine Yamal was named as such.

The Spanish international is very much in touch with his roots, and carries the Moroccan flag and Guinean flag on his boots for Spain. His celebration, making a ‘305’ with his hands, references the postcode of the Rocafonda neighbourhood.

In addition, Bar Canaletes have revealed that recently Lamine Yamal invited a group of his friends from Rocafonda to Barcelona’s Ciutat Esportiva training ground, where they enjoyed a kickabout together.
