Familiar face emerges as free agent option for Barcelona in midfield following Marc Bernal injury

Barcelona are scouring the transfer market for a midfielder after Marc Bernal was ruled out for the season with a major knee injury on Tuesday. Given their salary limit struggles, their ability to spend is limited.

The Catalan side have missed out on Liverpool teenager Stefan Bajcetic on loan, who is instead moving to RB Salzburg, as they are not yet in a position to guarantee they can register him. With their new sponsorship deal being negotiated with Nike unlikely to arrive before the end of the transfer window, the Blaugrana made be relying on a bank guarantee from the board of directors and/or the sale of Eric Garcia to get anyone else through the door.

As per Sport, former Juventus and Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Adrien Rabiot is one of the names on the shortlist of Barcelona Sporting Director Deco. The French international has been linked with Barcelona on a number of occasions in summers past, following interest from the La Liga leaders nearly a decade ago.

As the 29-year-old is a free agent, he could be signed after the transfer window deadline, and indeed, that may give Barcelona time to seal the Nike deal and return to within their salary limit. There could be concerns over both Rabiot’s attitude, and his fit as the deepest-lying midfielder, a role he has not played for some time. Equally, Barcelona are not in a position to be picky.
