In the last few days, it had been reported that Mats Hummels had decided to accept an offer from Real Sociedad. The 35-year-old defender is currently a free agent following the expiration of his Borussia Dortmund contract at the end of June, and while he appeared set on a move to Donostia-San Sebastian, he has now decided against this.
As per Relevo, Hummels has informed La Real of his decision, and has cited family reasons as his explanation for backing out. A deal could be re-ignited in a few weeks’ time, but for now, it will not proceed.
Hummels’ decision to turn them down is very bad news for Real Sociedad. They now only have two days to sign a new central defender, something that has been needed since Robin Le Normand joined Atletico Madrid. Time is running out for a crucial piece to be added to Imanol Alguacil’s squad.
