Celta Vigo confirm signing of former Barcelona and Chelsea defender

Celta Vigo have had a very strong start to the new season, despite their agonising 4-3 defeat to Villarreal on Monday night. A concern for head coach Claudio Giraldez will be that six goals have been conceded in the three matches, and this is perhaps a reason why a move has been made for Marcos Alonso.

Alonso, 33, had been a free agent following the expiry of his Barcelona contract in June. He’s received proposals from abroad, but his desire has been to continue in Spain. Sevilla were linked, but he’s now signed a contract with Celta, with the agreement being confirmed on Wednesday.

Alonso becomes the third signing of the summer for Celta, after Borja Iglesias and Ilaix Moriba. If he is deemed ready by Giraldez and his coaching staff, he could make his debut for the Galicians this weekend when they make the trip to El Sadar, where they will face Osasuna.
