Bayer Leverkusen address Barcelona links with defender – “I expect him…”

Barcelona appear keen to sign a new central defender before the summer transfer window closes on Friday, with Hansi Flick only having three recognised options (Pau Cubarsi, Inigo Martinez and Jules Kounde) due to injuries for Ronald Araujo, Andreas Christensen and Eric Garcia.

At this stage, Jonathan Tah is their primary target, and it was reported earlier on Wednesday that an offer had been submitted to Bayer Leverkusen. However, this information has now been denied by Simon Rolfes, who is the sporting director for the reigning Bundesliga champions.

Tah has been strongly linked with Bayern Munich for most of the summer, but a deal can yet to transpire there. It gives an opportunity to Barcelona, especially as the 28-year-old is out of contract in 2025 – therefore, he should be available below his market value.

It remains to be seen whether Barcelona are able to reach an agreement with Leverkusen in the next two days. Ultimately, it could depend on whether a deal is financially viable for the early La Liga pace-setters.
