Atletico Madrid have high hopes for new signing despite planned initial lack of prominence

On Tuesday, Atletico Madrid announced their sixth – and likely final – signing of the summer. Juan Musso joins from Atalanta on loan with an obligation to buy, and he will become the new number two goalkeeper in Diego Simeone’s squad, succeeding the recently-departed Horatiu Moldovan.

In recent years, Moldovan and predecessor Ivo Grbic have been unable to challenge Jan Oblak, which has led the Slovenian stopper to drop his level. However, Relevo say that Atleti officials fully believe that Musso can push for the starting position at the Metropolitano this season – and in seasons to come if he joins permanently.

Musso was introduced at a welcome ceremony soon after his arrival became official, and he spoke of his delight at joining Los Colchoneros. He also addressed the competition with Oblak.

“When I saw the possibility of Atletico, it was a resounding yes. In addition to six years in Italy, being able to come to Atletico, to Madrid, with so many Argentines. For me it is a dream come true.

“For me it is very easy to answer you. It is a difficult and dreamed challenge. Nothing I accomplished was easy. I come knowing that I compete with one of the best goalkeepers in the world, so the squad is more competitive.”
