Arsenal confirm long-awaited €37.5m signing from La Liga

Arsenal have confirmed the signing of Mikel Merino from Real Sociedad, with the 28-year-old signing a four-year deal (with an option for a fifth) in London. After weeks of negotiations, the Gunners have finally secured their midfield target.

Merino was linked with Atletico Madrid and Barcelona earlier in the summer, as a cut-price option for both, but Mikel Arteta convinced him that the Emirates was the place to go, where he will be reunited with former teammate and now captain Martin Odegaard. The deal will cost a reported €32.5m with another €5m available in variables, and Merino will wear the number 23 shirt.

The Euro 2024-winner leaves La Real after six successful years in Donostia-San Sebastian, after joining from Newcastle United. During his time Real Sociedad went on an historic run qualifying for Europe in every season he has been there, as well as making the Champions League and winning a Copa del Rey. Merino made 242 appearances, scoring 27 goals and giving 30 assists.

Arsenal will get a physically imposing midfielder, capable of winning the ball back, but also causing issues at the other end. His ability to get into the box, and his touch have been a key part of La Real’s success in recent years, as well as his competitive edge.
