Barcelona seize late Athletic Club win on Hansi Flick’s home debut

Barcelona’s first home game of the La Liga season ended in a dramatic 2-1 win over rivals Athletic Club.

Hansi Flick secured all three points on his first competitive appearance in front of the Estadi Olímpic Lluís Companys crowd to continue a 100% record so far in 2024/25.

The opening stages were short on chances, before Lamine Yamal’s first goal of the season exploded the contest into life, as he curled home a fine breakthrough.

However, the away side were handed a lifeline before the interval, as Oihan Sancet confidently converted from the penalty spot.

Barcelona looked to step up a gear after the restart as Robert Lewandowski headed against the post.

Lewandowski looked set to end the night in frustration, after being denied twice by Alex Padilla, but the Polish veteran had the final say.

On the back of scoring the winner against Valencia last weekend, Lewandowski stayed alive inside the box, to smash home the clincher.

Barcelona will be looking to extend their winning streak next weekend as they head to Rayo Vallecano on August 27.
