Getafe coach Jose Bordalas fumes about transfer business – ‘We’ll end up paying for it’

Getafe boss Jose Bordalas has once again blasted the club management and President Angel Torres, warning him that it could end up in Los Azulones getting relegated. For their first game at San Mames last week, Getafe had a squad of just 17 players, and the situation is yet to improve.

Speaking ahead of Getafe’s clash with Rayo Vallecano on Saturday night, Bordalas cut a very different figure from the one that was proud of their point at San Mames, as he sought to pressure Sporting Director Ruben Reyes and Torres into action.

“There is a certain anxiety and concern,” commented Bordalas, predicting a “long and difficult season.” It’s not just that Getafe are short of players currently, two of their best are also likely to depart before the end of the window. “Djene is a Getafe player and we have no news of anything. Mayoral is a Getafe player and I, as a coach, am counting on him. We are taking great care so that he gets back in the best condition,” assessed the Getafe coach.

“We are aware that there are many positions to fill. The club knows this, obviously, because the president has said it publicly. “We need at least four or five players, I think a few more.”

Bordalas kept Getafe up comfortably last season, and at one stage was on the fringes of the European race, but with the squad haemorrhaging talent and Mayoral still a target for other sides, he made it clear that relegation was a distinct possibility.

“The season is long and the squad is small. The teams [around us] have been significantly strengthened. I arrived, in my second stage at the club, in a difficult final stretch, in an agonising situation, and we managed to survive,” he told Relevo.

“The squad was large and has been weakening since then. Last year fewer players arrived than left. And this season we are as we are. You can’t weaken the squad like that because in the end, you end up paying for it.”

The Alicante native returned to Getafe a second time to save them two seasons ago, and was persuaded to stay on at the Coliseum. However Torres may see Bordalas look to move on if he cannot guarantee him a minimum of resources going forward, albeit he seems locked in for this season.
