Mikel Merino to miss Real Sociedad’s La Liga opener as Arsenal close in

Mikel Merino is not expected to be involved in Real Sociedad’s opening game of the 2024/25 La Liga season as he edges closer to Arsenal.

La Real are working on the final stages of an agreement with the Premier League side to allow Merino to move to London.

As per the latest update on the saga, Arsenal are close to reaching a final agreement for Merino, which will be worth around €30m, but could rise to €35m including variables.

However, with the talks ongoing, the practicalities of his role in San Sebastian need to be factored in, ahead of hosting Rayo Vallecano on August 18.

Reports from Marca confirm he took part in the final training session before facing Rayo, as he continues on a delayed preseason programme, but he will be omitted from the matchday squad.

Martin Zubimendi should feature in the first league outing of the season after rejecting a move to Liverpool earlier this month.
