Barcelona expect to be priced out of move for Deco’s desire at Liverpool

Barcelona have all-but given up hope of signing Nico Williams this summer, with the 22-year-old set to begin the 2024-25 La Liga season with Athletic Club, who are in action on Thursday evening. This was meant that alternatives are now being pursued, and one of those is Liverpool’s Luis Diaz.

Diaz is the favoured option of Deco, Barcelona’s sporting director. Earlier this week, it was reported that he had “re-activated” the operation, following interest in the Colombian winger earlier in the summer, which was shelved due to the pursuit of Williams.

However, Deco’s dreams appear to be dying. MD have reported that Barcelona expect to be unable to sign Diaz this summer because of financial reasons. Officials at Can Barca believe that Liverpool’s asking price would outweigh the valuation that was set to sign a new left winger – which is believed to be €55-60m. It would also be higher than the €62m it would take to sign Williams.

This should be a blessing in disguise for Barcelona. Diaz is a good player, but he’s not worth the money quoted by Liverpool, when taking into account their financial woes, and the player’s wages/goalscoring qualities. It would surely be better if the money was spent on a low-cost option, or saved altogether for next summer.
