WATCH: Real Madrid lead UEFA Super Cup final courtesy of Federico Valverde

The UEFA Super Cup final in Warsaw was not the best watch for the opening 59 minutes, with neither side having much of an impact on the other’s team goal. However, the deadlock has now been broken, and the goal has gone the way of the reigning Champions League champions.

Minutes after a sublime save from Thibaut Courtois, who denied Mario Pasalic, Real Madrid have taken the lead courtesy of Federico Valverde. Vinicius Junior did brilliantly on the left wing, driving to the by-line before cutting the ball back to the Uruguayan midfielder to score the first goal of Los Blancos’ season.

Vinicius continues the magic he showed throughout last season, which has him as one of the favourites to win the 2024 Ballon d’Or. It’s fantastic play from him, and Valverde couldn’t miss from a yard out.

Real Madrid already had control of the final, albeit without really threatening the Atalanta goal. Valverde’s strike should allow them to manage proceedings from here on out.
