The return of the Camp Nou Clasico this season

The latest Clasico held in the Camp Nou stadium was a memorable one as Barcelona were thumped 4-0 by their most bitter rivals Real Madrid in an impressive football display. Los Blancos showed their attacking skills that they possess to the watching global crowd with millions tuning in around the world.

The second leg of a Copa del Rey semi-final which Barcelona went into a goal to the good, having ground out a 1-0 win over Real Madrid at the Bernabeu, with an own goal caused by Franck Kessie sufficient to see them back to Catalonia with an advantage.

In between, Barcelona more or less wrapped up the Liga title with a 2-1 win over Real Madrid again, with Kessie grabbing the winner late on. For the first half, it continued to be a tight affair, with Barcelona hitting the woodwork and having one cleared off the line. Real Madrid had looked dangerous without creating an abundance of chances.

As Barcelona applied pressure late in first-half stoppage time though, Real Madrid broke up field, and Vinicius Junior was on hand to level the score on aggregate. That tipped matters in favour of Real Madrid though, and they were rampant in the second half, with Karim Benzema netting a hat-trick of misery for the locals.

Since, Real Madrid have had the better of Barcelona, and they inflicted a similar thumping on the Blaugrana in the Spanish Supercup final earlier this year. The league encounters were much tighter affairs though, and only late goals from Jude Bellingham in both clashes saw Real Madrid edge Barcelona in both games.

In the first tie, Bellingham scored a thumping effort from distance, and then ghosted into the box for a late winner. Barcelona struggled to stem the Real Madrid attack in the second half. Given a similar situation this season, it might help that they will be back at their home of Camp Nou, albeit with a reduced 60,000 capacity. That home advantage should weigh much more in 2025, when they head away from Montjuic and its atmosphere-sapping running track.

The next Clasico will take place in October at the Santiago Bernabeu, and is already eagerly anticipated, with fans and pundits alike looking forward to the next chapter in this storied rivalry.
