Getafe name matchday squad comprising of only 15 players for La Liga opener

Getafe has had a very difficult summer, to put it mildly. They’ve made five signings, but their desire to secure more has been stunted by financial problems – currently, they do not have the salary space to register any more players.

These struggles were laid bare on Wednesday when head coach Jose Bordalas announced his matchday squad for Getafe’s opening match of the 2024-25 La Liga season, against Athletic Club on Thursday evening. Only 15 players will make the trip to San Mames – three of whom are goalkeepers.

Furthermore, Getafe will not have a striker making the trip. Borja Mayoral has not been risked, as he also wasn’t during any pre-season matches following his recovery from a long-term knee injury. Mayoral is one of the players that Los Azulones are desperate to sell, as the freeing of his wages – on top of the transfer fee – would massively help secure new signings.

It’s a sad state of affairs for Getafe at the moment. They will be determined to solve these problems before the end of the summer, otherwise relegation could be a very real possibility.
