Atletico Madrid confirm signing of Julian Alvarez from Manchester City

Atletico Madrid have announced a huge marquee signing this summer, with the arrival of Julian Alvarez from Manchester City. The 24-year-old has signed a six-year deal with Los Colchoneros.

The World Cup-winner becomes Atletico Madrid’s second-most expensive signing ever after Joao Felix (€127m) – Football España has been informed that the deal will cost Atletico Madrid €70m plus €25m in variables.

Alvarez become the sixth Argentine player to join the Atletico squad, in addition to manager Diego Simeone too. He is set to become a franchise player for Los Rojiblancos, with Antoine Griezmann ageing into his mid-thirties.

While at Manchester City, he scored 36 goals and gave 18 assists in 103 appearances under Pep Guardiola, and collected five trophies, including a Champions League and two Premier League titles. Alvarez decided to leave after being left out of too many big games in his view though, and faced a charm offensive from Diego Simeone over recent months, as well as his compatriots at the club.
