Atalanta deal for Spain Olympic gold medallist collapses

Spanish right-back Marc Pubill was on a high as he left Paris on Saturday to head to Bergamo, having just secured the gold medal at the Olympics. However his summer has been thrown into a degree of chaos.

He was due to complete a move to Atalanta from relegated Almeria, and even underwent his medical, but Diario de Almeria say Atalanta have pulled out of the deal. A €16m fee had been agreed, with €4m more available in variables, but Fabrizio Romano has also confirmed that the deal is off, as La Dea look to Wesley and Neco Williams as alternatives.

Pubill excelled for Spain at the Olympics, and it seems Almeria will likely try to sell him this summer, as they are struggling to register players. It is also a major blow for Levante, who were due 25% of the deal due to a sell-on clause. The 21-year-old had an inconsistent season last year, although the same can be said for much of Almeria’s team last year, but Pubill is generally considered one of the more talented young options on the right side of defence.
