Hansi Flick decision will lead to Barcelona selling 20-year-old defender

Despite having only ended their involvement at the 2024 Olympic Games on Friday, Pau Cubarsi and Eric Garcia both returned to Barcelona on Sunday to continue their preparations ahead of the 2024-25 season kicking off next weekend.

As things stand, both players are set to continue at Barcelona for the upcoming campaign. Sport say that Eric is the sixth centre-back that will be counted on by head coach Hansi Flick, joining Ronald Araujo, Andreas Christensen, Cubarsi, Jules Kounde and Inigo Martinez.

Barcelona currently have eight central defenders in the first team fold. Clement Lenglet will soon be moved on, while the other odd one out, Mikayil Faye, is also set to be sold before the transfer window closes.

Flick has initially counted on Faye, but with little chance of first team minutes during the 2024-25 season, it makes sense to sell him, thus accumulating much-needed funds. However, it’s also imperative that Barcelona retain a share in the 20-year-old’s future, through a sell-on and/or buy-back clause.
