Barcelona lose control of Premier League-bound defender, no sell-on or buy-back clause included in deal

In the next 24-48 hours, Barcelona’s latest departure will be confirmed. In the last few days, a deal was agreed with Bournemouth for Julian Araujo, and the Mexican defender – who was out of favour during pre-season – will travel to England on Sunday to finalise the move.

Barcelona will receive €10m as a fixed fee as a result of the agreement with Bournemouth – a handy amount given their ongoing financial problems. However, it turns out that the deal is not a particularly favourable one in the grand scheme of things.

That’s because they have not been able to include a sell-on or buy-back clause in the deal for Araujo, as revealed by Fabrizio Romano.

Araujo is a very talented young defender, and although selling him now made sense due to the overcrowding at right-back, it makes little sense that Barcelona have lost any chance of being able to re-sign him on favourable terms down the line. It would be even more crazy if they are to use the funds just received on Joao Cancelo, who they are continuing to pursue.
