Barcelona confirm Sergi Roberto exit after contract deadlock

Barcelona have confirmed the departure of club captain Sergi Roberto after 18 years at the Catalan giants.

Roberto’s contract expired at the end of June, with no firm update on a renewal, despite some initial indications of progress from both sides.

Financial issues remain a major concern for La Blaugrana and the decision was eventually made not to offer him an extension.

Last minute talks did not change that position, and the 32-year-old defender/midfielder will now move on as a free agent, with transfer expert Matteo Moretto claiming Fiorentina are favourites to complete a deal.

Roberto joined Barcelona’s famous La Masia academy aged 14, and made his first team debut in November 2010, going on to make 373 appearances for the club.

He also picked up two UEFA Champions Leagues, seven La Liga titles, six Copa del Rey trophies and two Club World Cups in a stellar career as a trusted and versatile operator for Barcelona.
