Five players struck down with virus five days before Girona’s La Liga opener

Girona have had a tough pre-season in terms of results, compounded by their back-to-back defeats against Newcastle United (4-0) and Bournemouth (3-2) on Friday and Saturday respectively. There also appears to be a worry personnel wise ahead of their opening fixture of the 2024-25 season, which is against Real Betis on Thursday evening.

As per MD, five players missed the match against Bournemouth because of a virus: Donny van de Beek, Valery Fernandez, Oriol Comas, Viktor Tsygankov and Christian Portu. Bryan Gil was absent against Newcastle as he was suffering with discomfort, although he was able to take part against Bournemouth.

Lasidlav Krejci, Girona’s first signing of the summer, has not played since the friendly against Montpellier on the 20th of July. His absence has not been explained, which will be a worry for the club’s supporters – it appears that he won’t play against Betis, but it’s yet to be determined whether any of his teammates will be the same.
