Liverpool defender Trent Alexander-Arnold has a crunch decision to make on his club future in the coming months.
The Reds academy product has developed into one of the world’s best right backs in recent season but his next step is unclear.
As he enters into the final year of his contract at Anfield, his options focus on signing an extension, or accepting a new challenge, most likely at Real Madrid.
Los Blancos have reportedly highlighted him as a long term option on the right side of defence with his full skillset only partially unleashed in the Premier League.
His assist tally and chance creation from right back have led to calls that he should be utilised further forward despite misgivings on that by former boss Jurgen Klopp.
In 2023/24, Klopp appeared to strike an ideal balance, with Trent slotting into a ‘quarter back’ midfield role with Liverpool in possession, and drifting back to right back when the ball was turned over.
However, much of that strategy was wedded to Klopp’s tactical nous, and new boss Arne Slot prefers a more orthodox right back, with Northern Ireland international Conor Bradley mooted as the more natural fit there.
Trent will play a key role for Liverpool this season, but if he is unconvinced by Slot or is unable to play a more natural role, his mind could be made up by Bradley’s progress.
A greater flexibility at Real Madrid would be a pull factor for Trent, as the quality around him would allow for more focus on what he offers in a positive sense, as opposed to his weak points.
Real Madrid will monitor the situation with interest in the months ahead, with a firm call expected either way at the start of 2025, but the Spanish champions will not pay a transfer fee for him in any circumstance.
