Defender confirms he will remain at Barcelona this summer

Barcelona defender Eric Garcia has confirmed that he will be remaining at the club this summer. The 24-year-old excelled at Girona last season on loan, and was a key part of Spain’s triumph at the Olympic Games in Paris, where La Roja won gold.

Garcia expects to be back alongside Olympic partner at the back Pau Cubarsi in a few months. Speaking after winning gold in a thriller against France, Garcia told RAC1 that he had discussed his future with new manager Hansi Flick, and that he fully expected to remain at the club this summer, despite a large amount of central defenders at the club.

He also told Jijantes that he would be back in training in a matter of 48 hours.

“On Sunday I will train with Barca. I’m looking forward to training with Flick. I have had a good feeling with the messages we have exchanged.”

“It has been historic, with Pau Cubarsí from day one we have had a very good relationship,” he noted on their Olympic triumph.

Barcelona currently have eight central defenders due to start the season in the senior squad, and while Mikayil Faye and Clement Lenglet are expected to leave the club, it will still leave Hansi Flick with one or two many players extra. Andreas Christensen could be used in midfield, and Jules Kounde might be used on the right side of defence, but it would be a surprise if all of the others remained.
