Carlo Ancelotti and Real Madrid doubts about 24-year-old continue to grow

Real Madrid defender Fran Garcia struggled at various points last season, and on his return to preparations for the new one, is not impressing again.

Los Blancos brought him back from Rayo Vallecano after three years for €5m as one of the standouts in La Liga, and he started the opening five games in La Liga last year. Yet after a torrid Madrid derby and Ferland Mendy’s return to fitness, was used only sparingly.

According to Relevo, he has done little to arrest Carlo Ancelotti’s doubts about him. During preseason he has returned in top shape, but miscontrols and sloppy defending have remained in their opening two friendlies against Milan and Barcelona, in spite of his lung-busting forays forward.

The club plans to continue with Mendy and Alphonso Davies either this summer or next, but the Canadian’s arrival will spell the exit of Garcia. For his part, he is happy to continue at his boyhood club, but is wanted by Bournemouth in the Premier League.

With little certainty on Davies’ arrival, it seems most likely that Garcia will be part of Real Madrid’s squad this coming season. It would surprise few if in Mendy’s absence, Eduardo Camavinga or later in the year David Alaba were trusted at left-back ahead of Garcia though. It seems he has a tough job to change minds about him at Valdebebas.
