Barcelona and Nike €20m apart as negotiations continue into back end of transfer window

Barcelona and Nike are still in talks over a new sponsorship deal, and despite it being deemed by many as crucial for their ability to act in the transfer market, it looks as if it is still a few weeks away.

According to MD, there are various conditions still being negotiated, but the chief factor is of course the money. Nike’s latest offer was for €95m per season, plus a €150m signing bonus, in a deal that would be valid for at least ten years – with a total value of €1.1b.

However Barcelona believe they could get up to €120m on the open market, and are demanding the same conditions, but with a an increase to €115m per season, and a total value of €1.3b. The Catalan club are expecting the decisive offer in mid-August.

Nike also want Barcelona to drop their legal battles agains the brand in order to sign the deal, including foregoing a penalty payment of €18m the Blaugrana are requesting. The other key factor to be negotiated is the length of the deal. Barcelona want the deal to last for ten years, until 2034, while Nike are keen to have an option for a five-year extension, and have including that clause in their latest offer.

If the deal is decisive for Barcelona’s transfer business, then it puts any of their targets at risk. Most top players are looking to resolve the future in the next week or two. Of the two players that have been most heavily linked with Barcelona, Nico Williams seems to be cooling as an option, some say due to their lack of funds, while Dani Olmo is keen to resolve his future by the 9th of August, when he is due back in RB Leipzig training.
