Atletico Madrid step up plans to sign Barcelona defender

So far, Atletico Madrid have not had too much luck in the transfer market. They’ve signed Robin Le Normand, but their efforts to sign another central defender – the replacement of Mario Hermoso – have been without success. David Hancko is their top target in this regard, but three offers have now been rejected by Feyenoord.

The latest rejection that caused Atleti to consider other targets. According to Foot Mercato, one of those is Barcelona’s Clement Lenglet. The French defender is out of favour in Catalonia, despite having impressed new manager Hansi Flick during the first few weeks of pre-season training.

Talks between Atleti and Lenglet’s representatives are already underway. The player himself is keen to join Diego Simeone’s squad, and it’s likely that he would have a regular starting spot if he were to arrive at the Metropolitano.

Barcelona will prioritise selling Lenglet this summer, and given that they know Atletico Madrid have the funds to make that deal happen, they’re likely to push hard for that. However, they would also accept another loan arrangement, provided that a large part of the 29-year-old’s salary is covered.
