Arsenal given free run at midfield target after top competition drops out of race

Real Sociedad President Jokin Aperribay confirmed on Monday evening that he would negotiate with other clubs if Mikel Merino asked them to. He also revealed that Merino already had offers on the table, and it looks as if Arsenal have the chance to move for him.

Two weeks ago Atletico Madrid moved for him as they sealed the deal for defender Robin Le Normand, but did not receive a positive response from the 27-year-old. That left Barcelona and Arsenal leading the race for Merino, but after Sport reported that the Catalan side are cooling their interest in Merino, it has left the Gunners with a free run at him.

Arsenal renewed talks with Merino’s camp last week after wrapping up a deal for Riccardo Calafiori. Mikel Arteta’s side will likely be able to secure him for a reduced price, with just a year left on his deal, with previous figures reported at around €25-30m.
