Arsenal yet to present offer for Spain star amid competition from La Liga giants

Real Sociedad look resigned to losing Mikel Merino this summer, with a year left on his deal, and no response to their contract offer for the 27-year-old. The Spain midfielder has interest from Atletico Madrid and Barcelona, but Arsenal look best-placed to make a deal happen.

Los Rojiblancos had tried to sign him last week, but their attempt was shunned by Merino, while Barcelona have informed him that while he is a target, he is not their priority. His future is unlikely to be resolved before they have an answer from Nico Williams.

That leaves the path clear for Arsenal to move for Merino. Manager Mikel Arteta has informed the Basque midfielder just how much he appreciates him, and after fresh contacts last week, they are now leading the race for him. Despite some reports to the contrary though, Matteo Moretto has informed Relevo that no offer has been made, and there is no agreement on terms with him.

If Arsenal can move quickly this week, despite Merino’s intention to weigh up all of his options carefully, then it looks as if they stand a good chance of securing his signature. They will likely be able to put together the largest financial package, and make him feel wanted while Barcelona stall.
