Summer of success continues: Spain defeat France to win 2024 U19 European Championship

Having already conquered Europe at senior level, Spain have now done so with their men’s U19 side. On Sunday evening, they won the 2024 U19 European Championship in Northern Ireland, defeating France 2-0 in the final.

La Rojita have looked imperious throughout the tournament, and just before half time, they took the lead courtesy of former Barcelona and Real Madrid striker, Iker Bravo. That goal came at a perfect time, and in the 69th minute, Real Betis winger Assane Diao doubled the advantage for Spain.

At that point, Spain were cruising, and things got easier a few minutes later when Yoni Gomis was sent off for France. That was the last of the action, which meant a ninth U19 European Championship title.

The success for Spanish international teams could get greater in the coming weeks. The senior women’s side are one of the favourites to win the gold medal at the Olympics in Paris, and the same can be said for Santi Denia’s U23 men’s squad.
