David de Gea forced to wait for return to football as Serie A move falls through

It’s been 12 months since David de Gea left Manchester United following the expiry of his contract, and surprisingly, he is still without a club. However, it is expected that he will make his return to football this summer, with one of the leading options having been a move to Serie A side Genoa.

Genoa have been in the market for a new goalkeeper following the sale of former La Masia talent Josep Martinez to Inter Milan. They had previously been in for Leo Roman, but in the last week, they’ve advanced for de Gea. However, this deal now appears to have fallen through.

That’s according to Sky Sports’ Dharmesh Sheth, who’s reported that Genoa have decided not to offer de Gea a contract at this stage because of his “unrealistic” wage demands.

It will be interesting to see where de Gea ends up. A return to La Liga appears unlikely at this stage, although Villarreal could be an option due to the impending departure of Filip Jorgensen. For now at least, nothing is close.
