Barcelona will not re-sign former player, Aston Villa and West Ham best-placed to complete deal

As of right now, Sergi Roberto is not a Barcelona player for the first time in 18 years. His contract expired on the 30th of June, and it was not renewed before this date, which means that he is without a club for the time being.

Barcelona are interested in re-signing Roberto, and an agreement is in place to bring him back. However, it would not be completed for a few weeks at least, given that the club has yet to return to La Liga’s 1:1 rule – and there are more important pieces of business that would be addressed first.

Because of this uncertainty, Roberto has now decided to stop waiting for Barcelona. He had prioritised a return to the Catalans, but as per Sport, he will not start looking for a new club. His preference is a move to the Premier League, and he’s currently attracting interest from Aston Villa and West Ham United.

Ajax have offered a contract, as have clubs in Saudi Arabia. Roberto will consider these, but his desire is England. Unless Barcelona miraculously return to the 1:1 rule imminently, there is little to no chance of him going back to the club he joined when he was 14.
