Barcelona confident in options at the back if they do not sign Joao Cancelo

Barcelona will not move mountains this summer to bring back Joao Cancelo. The Blaugrana are keen to have Cancelo back on loan from Manchester City, while their demands currently have any hope of that at a standstill.

Two Saudi Arabian sides are believed to be willing to pay the €30m asking price set for Cancelo this summer, but Barcelona will do no such thing. As per MD, they will look to negotiate a deal for Cancelo on loan, and may not even be willing to pay all of his salary, let alone consider a permanent deal. They are relying on agent Jorge Mendes to resolve the matter for them in the coming month.

Part of the reason is that they are comfortable in their options if they have to go without him. They could resort to using Jules Kounde there again this season, and also have youngsters Hector Fort and Julian Araujo to compete for the role.

After Alejandro Balde’s injury, Cancelo spent little time at right-back last season in reality, and struggled in the big games towards the end of the season. While they would no doubt like to have him as an option, little about his performances last year suggested he will be key for them this summer one way or another.
